I get asked all the time, "Why don’t you just get your signs printed?"; "Why don’t you make decals to sell?" Actually, I am often asked if my signs are decals, and I have to explain that no – I hand draw all my signs. Then I get asked why…
So, to put it simply. I love writing, drawing and painting! It brings me such peace and joy to sit with my paints, markers, pens, pencils and inks, and use my hands to create something beautiful.
There’s so much love and care that goes into a hand painted or hand drawn sign. From the initial sketches, colour choices, the coats of paint, planning the layout, to writing and drawing with paint pens, and finally the finishing touches. Every piece that I create is totally unique, with it's own quirks and imperfections, and I just love that. I agree that printed designs can give a perfect result, and require much less effort than my arduous approach. Hey, if that’s the look you’re going for – fantastic! Go get it! But that’s not what I do…
That’s not to say I never use a computer for part of the design process. Some of the images I include in my signs come from a digital source, and so do many of the fonts (not the modern calligraphy though – that’s all me). Then I either trace, transfer, or copy by hand. I also sometimes use graphic design software to plan out a layout or design, rather than draw and erase and draw and erase. Work smarter, not harder, right?
If you’re keen on the hand-made look, and would like to get some hand painted signs done for your shop window, wedding or event, please don’t hesitate to call 0493 841 865 or drop me a line – I’d love to hear from you.
