Hand-drawn Window Art... the Low-Waste Alternative to Stickers

If you’ve ever jazzed up your shop window with vinyl decals, you’ll know the cycle…

Apply. Display. Remove. Throw away. Repeat.

It can be quick and easy (although sometimes the application and removal isn't that easy) - but it also creates a surprising amount of waste over time.

If you’re looking for a more thoughtful approach to temporary window signage, hand-drawn window art might be exactly what you didn’t know you needed.

The hidden waste of window stickers

Vinyl window decals are designed to be temporary. Which means every time you update your window for a new season, sale, or promotion, those stickers usually end up in the bin.

Over time, that adds up:

  • Single-use materials

  • Packaging waste

  • Repeated production for short-term use

For businesses that refresh their windows regularly, it’s a cycle that’s easy to overlook.

A low-waste alternative that still stands out

Hand-drawn window art is created directly onto your glass using water-based paint markers.

No stickers. No backing sheets. No waste left behind.

And when it’s time for a new design?

It simply wipes off with window cleaner.

  • No residue

  • No landfill

  • No complicated removal process

For businesses looking for eco-friendly window signage, it’s a simple and effective switch.

But Belinda... Don't you use a template? Surely that counts as waste...

Yes, sometimes I do use a template - you're exactly right! When I need to make sure the lettering and layout are just right, I draw the design on paper and stick it to your window using paper tape, then I trace your design onto the glass. And yes, this is a form of waste - but remember, paper is easily recyclable. So all my templates end up in the recycle bin - NOT landfill.

Flexible, seasonal, and guilt-free

One of the biggest advantages of hand-drawn window art is how easy it is to update.

You can refresh your space for:

  • Seasonal campaigns (Easter, Christmas, sales)

  • New product launches

  • Events or promotions

And because there’s no single-use plastics involved, you can change things up as often as you like without the environmental impact.

It’s better for your brand, too

Savvy customers are paying more attention than ever to how businesses operate.

Small, visible choices - like how you present your shopfront - can quietly communicate your values.

Choosing hand-drawn window art shows:

  • Thoughtfulness

  • Creativity

  • A more sustainable approach

It’s a small detail that can leave a lasting impression.

And yes - it still looks amazing

Sustainability doesn’t mean compromising on style. In fact, window art that is created by hand often feels more:

  • Personal

  • Eye-catching

  • Unique to your brand
